Nature, Power, and Language

  • Fort George Lovell Taproom 1483 Duane Street Astoria, OR (map)

A special Philosofarian x North Coast Watershed Association conversation

We say nature is worth protecting.

But why? And is it possible to talk honestly about nature at all?

Calling a forest a resource, a habitat, a wilderness, a home, or something sacred can change what we notice and what we value.

How do we express nature’s value without reducing it to our own uses or assumptions? What can poetry reveal that ordinary description misses? And who gets to decide which ways of talking about nature are taken seriously?

Philosophers Strand Sheldahl-Thomason and Seth Tichenor join poet Logan Garner for one conversation about nature, value, expression, and power.
